Russia's last participation in the World Cup was in 1990. 5th out of the 6 in the World Ranking (23th), they are just behind Poland.
On a European level, their latest years results show true progress. Playing in Challenge in 2007, this year they have already won silver at the EuroHockey Nations Trophy 2009. They will be playing in the highest division in 2011.
They will play the opening match with Japan on October 31st at 11.30am. Then, the Russians will face Pakistan (Sunday November 1st at 11.30am), Poland (Tuesday November 3rd at 1.30am), France (Thursday November 5th at 3.30pm), Italy (Saturday November 7th at 12.30am).
Winning this tournament would allow them to compete in their 4th World Cup (1982, 1986, 1990).
