Lille and its surroundings hold a wide variety of museums and other monuments, not to be missed.
- The Cathedral Notre Dame de la Treille (gothic style from the XIIIth century): the main façade, inaugurated in 1999. Designed by Lille architect Pierre-Louis Carlier, it is the result of an amazing technical feat, made possible by the help of Peter Rice (engineer of the Sydney Opera House and the Centre Pompidou in Paris).
- The Palais des Beaux Arts whose permanent collection makes it the 2nd generalist museum in France after the Louvre (XIXth century architecture). It houses, most notably, prestigious European collections (Goya, Delacroix, Rubens…), representations of French paintings of course as well as drawings, ceramics from the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries…
- It is also possible to organise a guided tour of the old quarters of Lille …
- The Piscine Musée d’Art and Industrie André Diligent: this former Art Déco swimming pool built in 1932 presents original collections of decorative arts (drawings, textile, and ceramics) and fine arts (paintings, sculptures) in surprising and beautifully transformed surroundings.
