From the 31st of October to the 8th of November in Lille, Pakistan, Japan, Poland, Russia, Italy and France will compete in the WorldHockey World Cup Qualifier.

This Hero Honda World Cup will take place in New Dheli from February 28th to March 13th, 2010. Major Hockey nation, India had not hosted the World Cup since 1982 (Bombay), where Pakistan won.

Background

The first World Cup took place in 1971 in Barcelona. Before that, the Olympic Games were the unique official international tournament. The 3 most titled nations are:

  • Pakistan: 4 titles, 2 silver medals (participation in all the editions)
  • Netherlands: 3 titles, 2 silver medals, 1 bronze medal
  • Germany: 2 titles, 1 silver medal, 4 bronze medals
Poland participated in 6 World Cups (1975, 1978, 1982, 1986, 1998 and 2002). Japan competed in this competition 4 times (1971, 1973, 2002, 2006). Russia (1982, 1986, 1990) has played in this international event 3 times, France twice (1971 and 1990) and Italy only once (1978).

How to qualify for the Hero Honda World Cup 2010?

Apart from India who organises the World Cup, 8 teams are directly qualified through the continental Championships:

  • Europe (4): England, Germany, Netherlands, Spain
  • Asia (1): Korea
  • Oceania (1): Australia
  • Africa (1): South Africa
  • Pan-America (1): Canada

There are 3 vacancies left. The winners of the tournaments below will fly to India in february!

  • Worldhockey Men’s World Cup Qualifier Lille, France, 31 October-8 November 2009: Pakistan, Japan, France, Poland, Russia, Italy
  • BDO Men’s World Cup Qualifier, Invercargill, New Zealand, 7-15 November 2009: New Zealand, China, Malaysia, Austria, Scotland, Wales
  • BDO Men’s World Cup Qualifier, Quilmes, Argentina, 14-22 November 2009: Belgium, Argentina, Ireland, USA, Czech Republic, Chile.
